Teacher Bursaries
MERGA TEACHER BURSARY
MERGA is offering two "MERGA Teacher Bursaries" to support the attendance of 2 teachers at each annual conference. These are for up to $600 each, to help cover full conference registration and/or teacher replacement costs. The teachers must be making a contribution to the conference program — preferably a research report but otherwise a round table, a short communication, a symposium paper, or a poster.
The awards are available for practising primary, secondary or early childhood teachers attending the full conference. Applicants must be a member (or in a school with an institutional membership) of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) or one of its state members, Primary Mathematics Association (PMA) in New Zealand, and/or New Zealand Association of Mathematics Teachers (NZAMT). It is not possible to be awarded a MERGA Teacher Bursary and a MERGA Student Bursary in the same year.
Applications for MERGA Teacher Bursaries
Teachers intending to come to the MERGA conference should apply for a Teacher Bursary at the same time that they send in their proposal for a research paper, short oral, round table or poster. If this timeline is too tight to get your principal's endorsement, please email the Vice President (Development) to signal your intent to apply.
Only 2 bursaries are awarded each year, so the judge is the VP (Development). The selection criteria are:
- a) paper accepted for presentation at the conference in some format (5 points);
- b) paper accepted as a published research report (extra 5 points);
- c) paper entered for the PIA (extra 5 points); and/or
- d) one page statement about the applicant’s contribution to the mathematics education community: including school, local community, professional development, and/or state association (up to 10 points).
Applicants need to provide a letter of support from their principal on school letterhead.
Note:
- The payment is made by cheque, at the conference, by the Treasurer.
- No announcements of recipients' names are made.
- A person may receive only one MTB across his/her career. Other bursaries and awards may be used/won in other years.
Application form
The application form should be mailed (or printed, completed and signed, scanned and emailed) with the one-page statement and Principal’s endorsement to the MERGA’s Vice President (Development) by May 1.
