Privacy Policy
1. Principles
The Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia Inc Privacy Policy adopts the National Privacy Principles contained in the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000.
2. Why MERGA collects information
MERGA collects and stores personal information that is necessary to administer membership and meet its constitutional aims in providing services for its members. Services include the dissemination of information on recent mathematics education research and teaching developments, and the provision of means for members to communicate with each other on matters concerning mathematics education. Information is collected via membership application or renewal forms, and is recorded electronically.
3. Use and disclosure of information
Only MERGA’s Executive members and Sales Officer have access to personal information on membership application or renewal forms. A Membership Directory, containing information on members’ contact details and current research interests, is compiled biennially and distributed to members as part of their membership entitlements. Other personal information is not made available to any outside organisation except where members give specific written permission for a specific purpose.
4. Access by members
Members have the right to request access to their personal information. This right is subject to some exceptions which are set out in the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000. In order to ensure the privacy and security for its members and other associates, MERGA requires any request for information to be made in writing and include your full name, address and phone number. This will help us to speedily verify your request. Write to MERGA's VP (Communications).

MERGA’s website http://www.merga.net.au/ contains links to other sites. MERGA’s privacy policy does not extend to the organisations owning these sites.
7. Email and Facsimile transmissions
All MERGA’s correspondence by email or facsimile will bear the following warning:

8. Distribution
MERGA will provide all members with a copy of this Privacy Policy (Sections 1 to 5 above) via email by 21 December 2002. From 1 January 2003 the policy will be printed in the newsletter delivered after the annual conference, and distributed with membership renewal forms. The policy has also been displayed on our website http://www.merga.net.au/ since 21 December 2003.
